Organizing for every room in your home

Well…I was suppose to post this yesterday and my internet was having issues, Thanks to living in rural America! lol. Anyways, Are you ready to ring in the New Year with getting organized and taking some stress off, hopefully having time to do other things on your list or even a vacation sounds nice too. (something with sunshine for all of us being hit so hard with heavy rains lately.) 🙂

One problem I think we all face is getting ready to organize and then burn out sets in a few hours later and you have more of a mess than when you started. The reason:  we try to tackle every room and everything at once, with the mind set that we have to have a spotless house that day! well… let me tell you when you start be prepared to have a little mess. Rome was not built in a day and neither will your house be organized in a day 🙂 I will however give you some hope and help to get you to the finish line.

First things first…

  • Make a list of each room
  • Write down what you expect to accomplish in that room.
  • Make a separate list for each room on any DIY work that needs done.
  • Get your empty totes ready. Toss, Donate, Keep etc…
  • Set a day on your calendar to do that particular room

If you can only accomplish one room a week then work to do one room a week, don’t burn yourself out to quick.

Next, yes, we are not finished yet…

  • Make a cleaning schedule out for each room or better yet print one out there are several online, * I will post some at the bottom. Find what works for your family.
  • Do at least one load of laundry daily (if you have a large family) this will keep your “laundry day” from being so full.
  • Delegate, Delegate, Delegate! I know it’s sometimes easier to do it our selves but each child has the ability to help no matter the age, this is a chance to teach responsibility and maybe money management if you pay for chores and such.
  • Always make sure your kitchen sink is cleaned out and counters are wiped before you go to bed, It’s nice to wake to a clean start for the day. If you wake to clutter your whole day is thrown off!
  • Take advantage of baskets or furniture with storage for quick clean ups. *just make sure that you have a day set to put items away.
  • Baskets at top and bottom of stairs are great for things going up and coming down.  
  • Don’t panic if you get off schedule, just pick back up the next day, do what you can do cause life happens!
  • ***Remember we live in our homes, they are not museums as much as I would love for mine to look like something out of better home and gardens, It looks like I have a family and dogs! but I still manage to keep it clean and organized to the point of lowering my stress levels for the most part. Make memories and cleaning fun and not something everyone hates, however; if anyone knows how to make cleaning toilets fun please let me know! esp. if you have boys in the house (hehehe)
Last, but not least…
Never forget that one day we will have all the time in the world to clean and organize everything, cause our children will be grown and moved away, so take time to enjoy some clutter in your home; it means your making memories and having fun!

Also, many people do not know that I make my own laundry soap not only is it a huge savings but you don’t have to worry about running out. the recipe I use makes 10 gallons! yes, you read that right, 10 🙂 ps…It works well as a cleaning solution for toilets 😉 but by no means do not mop your floors with this stuff esp. if you have hardwood floors. lol here’s the recipe

4  Cups – hot tap water
1  Fels-Naptha soap bar- found in the laundry isle
1 Cup – Arm and Hammer washing soda *this is not baking soda, it’s found in the laundry isle of the stores.
½ Cup Borax


-Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)
-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

*I will sometimes add a large container of gain or downy scented pearls and let them dissolve in the warm water with the melted soap in stead of adding essential oils.

I don’t think you will be disappointed, I was skeptical when I first started. my husband quickly got on board with making the change, when his clothes smelled and felt just as clean if not cleaner than the commercial detergents. let me know what you think of it. * just a tip you can grate the soap up and add the dry ingredients and washing “pearls” and mix together in a jar and use 1-2 tablespoons per load if you would rather have “powder” like than liquid. My preference is liquid but they both work the same.
