Making your own household cleaners

Hello, And first let me say how sorry I am that I have not posted in weeks! I have been very much under the weather these days. The snow came and now is finally melting away (YAY!!) However; as I was recuperating and feeling some better I decided to try a couple household cleaners that I have seen around lately. Dishwasher Detergent and Toilet Cleaning Bombs. Which was perfect timing since I had just ran out of dishwasher detergent and my husband actually said “We sure do go thru a lot of this stuff”! LOL

Which leads me to this post. I was so excited to try a new recipe for something that could save money, We all know that being a stay at home mom requires being frugal 🙂 I know, I know, the savings here is not huge it’s only approximately $78 per year; but, savings is savings.

I seen recipe after recipe and decided to go with of course a mixture on my own, of what I thought would work out just fine. and guess what It was perfect! my husband said he would have never known that I made a detergent instead of purchasing store bought brands. I did not care for the lemonade packages several called for, and I really didn’t want to add salt, why? I don’t know, I just didn’t see a need since I do not have hard water and for the most part I rinse my dishes off well before adding them to the dishwasher. I tell my children it’s a machine not a magician, It is only capable of doing so much. Now without further ado, lets get to the recipe for this amazing cleaner.

Dishwasher Detergent Recipe

2 Cups Borax

2 Cups Washing Soda

1 Cup Lemi-Shine (citric Acid with Lemon oils)

Optional lemon essential oil (20-30 drops) for disinfectant purposes, if you use plain citric acid instead of Lemi-Shine.

**Vinegar for the rinse aid** I filled my rinse aid to full with vinegar otherwise if you just have a slot to fill each time, please don’t skip this step if you can help it. Also, it is recommended that you check with your manufacture about using vinegar as to not void your warranties. most companies do not have a problem with it.

Mix all ingredients together (wearing a mask if you are concerned with inhaling any of the powders. I mixed real slow as to not stir up dust when mixing. Transfer to a mason jar or pretty jar with tight lid. Use 2-2 1/2 tablespoons per load, add your vinegar to the rinse aid slot and run. If you have hard water or stuck on foods you may have to use added heat for your water.

Toilet Cleaning Bombs

I found these to smell great and the cleaning (fizziness) is effective, you can use them just for deodorizing if you choose. I used a recipe online but added extra essential oils. I give credit to this website for the following recipe: here

1 1/3 Cup of Baking Soda

1/2 Cup Citric Acid (found in the canning goods isle of your local grocery store)

30 drops of each Lavender Essential Oil

30 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

30 drops Lemon Essential Oil

30 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil

*** Sorry for the pics not uploading, I will see if I can work on that. :/

Hope you have fun making your own cleaners. please let me know what you think about them or if you have a recipe you love to use.
